Telegram Virtual Number Verification: Sign Up Without Your SIM

Sign up for Telegram with a virtual number: step-by-step setup, why codes sometimes go to the app instead of SMS, cloud passwords and hiding your phone number.

To sign up for Telegram with a virtual number, rent a number for the Telegram service, enter it in the Telegram app, and read the login code from your OTPX dashboard. Then set a cloud password and tighten your privacy settings, because the number is temporary and Telegram treats the password as your long-term key.

This guide walks through the signup, explains why Telegram sometimes sends the code to the app instead of by SMS, and covers the settings that keep your new account secure and private.

Why people use a virtual number for Telegram

Telegram needs a phone number to create an account, and by default that number can be visible to contacts and is used to match you with people who have it saved. Legitimate reasons to use a separate number include:

  • Running a channel, community or support account for a business, separate from your personal identity.
  • Joining large public groups without connecting them to the number your bank and family use.
  • Keeping a work account apart from your personal one on the same phone (Telegram supports multiple accounts in one app).
  • Testing a Telegram bot or login flow during development.

Please keep it legitimate. Do not use virtual numbers for spam, scams, fake engagement or to return after Telegram has banned an account. That is against Telegram's terms and OTPX's acceptable use policy.

Step-by-step: Telegram signup with OTPX

Open Telegram on the "Your phone number" screen before buying the number, so you can use it straight away.

  1. Create an account and add funds. Register on OTPX, then top up with UPI from ₹10 or crypto from ₹90, with no top-up fees.
  2. Select Telegram as the service. You can also go directly to the Telegram virtual number page.
  3. Choose a country and a server. Servers are different providers with different prices and success rates. Check pricing to compare.
  4. Get the number. It is issued instantly. Copy it.
  5. Enter the number in Telegram. Pick the correct country, paste the rest of the number, and continue.
  6. Wait for the SMS. The Get OTP page checks automatically every few seconds. When the code appears, type it into Telegram.
  7. Finish your profile, then go straight to the security steps below.

If no SMS arrives within 20 minutes, the number is cancelled and the full amount is refunded to your OTPX wallet automatically. You can also cancel earlier and try another server or country.

Code in the app vs code by SMS

This catches a lot of people out. Telegram does not always send the login code by SMS:

  • If the number already has an active Telegram session somewhere, Telegram sends the code as a message inside that existing session, not by SMS. With a fresh virtual number, that would mean a previous user of the number still has a session, and you will not see the code on OTPX.
  • For new signups, Telegram normally sends an SMS, but it may first try other methods. If you see a message saying the code was sent to the Telegram app, look for an option like "Didn't get the code?" or "Send code via SMS" and wait for it to become available.
  • Telegram may also offer a phone call or other verification methods. A virtual SMS number is built for text messages, so choose SMS when you have the choice.

If Telegram insists the code was sent to another device and never offers SMS, cancel the number in OTPX (you get a refund since no SMS arrived) and pick a different one.

Choosing a country and server

  • Pick a country that suits the account. If your audience is in India, an Indian number may feel more natural, but for a privacy account any accepted country works.
  • Switch servers before switching countries. If one server's number gets no SMS, another provider in the same country may deliver fine.
  • Do not chase the cheapest option for an account you care about. Reliability is usually worth a small difference in price.
  • Accept that availability changes. Telegram adjusts which number ranges it trusts, so what worked last week may not work today.

Set a cloud password immediately

Your OTPX number is a one-time activation. If Telegram ever logs you out and asks for a new code, you will not be able to receive it on that number again. The fix is to make the account recoverable without the phone number:

  1. Open Settings, then Privacy and Security, then Two-Step Verification (Telegram calls this the cloud password).
  2. Create a strong password that you do not use anywhere else.
  3. Add a recovery email when prompted, and confirm it.
  4. Stay logged in on at least one device, ideally two (for example phone and desktop), so you always have an active session.

Treat the cloud password as the real key to your Telegram account. The virtual number only gets you through the first door.

Hide your phone number on Telegram

Using a separate number already helps, but Telegram has good privacy controls you should set as well. Under Settings, then Privacy and Security:

  • Phone Number: set "Who can see my phone number" to Nobody. Then set "Who can find me by my number" to My Contacts so strangers cannot look you up.
  • Username: create a username so people can reach you without your number at all.
  • Last Seen and Online, Profile Photo, Forwarded Messages, Groups: restrict these to contacts if you want a quieter account.
  • Active Sessions: check this list from time to time and end any session you do not recognise.

Honest limitations

  • Telegram can refuse a number or not send an SMS for reasons OTPX cannot see or change. Acceptance varies by platform and country, and you are refunded automatically if no SMS arrives within 20 minutes.
  • Once a code has been received, the order is complete and is not refundable.
  • Telegram may limit or ban any account that breaks its rules, regardless of the kind of number used.

Frequently asked questions

Why did Telegram say the code was sent to the app?

Telegram sends the code inside an existing session when the number is already logged in somewhere. Look for the option to send the code by SMS, or cancel the number for a refund and pick another one.

Can I log back in later with the same virtual number?

Not reliably, since OTPX numbers are one-time activations. Set a cloud password with a recovery email and stay logged in on more than one device.

How do I hide my phone number on Telegram?

Go to Settings, Privacy and Security, Phone Number, and set who can see it to Nobody. Also limit who can find you by number and create a username.

What if no Telegram code arrives?

If no SMS arrives within 20 minutes, the number is cancelled and the full amount is refunded to your OTPX wallet automatically. You can also cancel earlier and try another server.
