If your OTP is not arriving, the cause is usually one of a few things: a network or DND problem on your phone, a wrongly entered number, a rate limit from requesting too many codes, or the sender refusing to deliver to that number. Wait 60 to 90 seconds before resending, check the number format, and if you are using a virtual number, switch server or country instead of retrying the same one.
Below are the causes in more detail, followed by fixes for your own phone and for virtual numbers.
Why OTPs fail to arrive
Network and DND issues
On your own SIM, weak signal, a full SMS inbox, airplane mode or an expired plan can all hold up messages. In India, Do Not Disturb (DND) settings generally do not block transactional OTPs, but misconfigured spam filters or third-party SMS apps sometimes hide them in a spam or "promotions" folder.
Wrong number format
This is more common than people think. If you select a country in a dropdown and then also type its code (for example +91), the service gets a number with the country code twice. Some forms also reject spaces, dashes or a leading zero. The code goes nowhere, or the form shows an "invalid number" error.
Rate limits
Services limit how many codes they will send to one number, device or IP address within a short time. Press "resend" several times in a row and you may get a cooldown timer, or the service may silently stop sending for a while.
The sender blocks certain number ranges
Some platforms do not deliver to number ranges they associate with virtual or reused numbers. Sometimes they say so; often they just accept the number and never send anything. Each platform decides this independently, and it can change at any time.
Waiting too little, or too long
SMS delivery can take anywhere from a few seconds to a couple of minutes, especially across countries. Resending after 10 seconds can invalidate the first code. On the other hand, most OTPs expire after a few minutes, so a code that finally arrives very late may no longer work.
The service is not sending an SMS at all
Many apps prefer to send codes by voice call, email, push notification or inside an app session you are already logged into. Telegram, for example, may send the code to the app if the number is already active somewhere. If no SMS is being sent, no SMS can arrive.
Fixes when using your own phone
- Check signal and reception. Toggle airplane mode on and off, or restart the phone.
- Check your SMS inbox and spam folders, including any third-party SMS app. Clear space if the inbox is full.
- Confirm your plan is active and that your SIM can receive SMS (some data-only plans cannot).
- Re-enter the number carefully, without a duplicate country code, spaces or a leading zero.
- Wait 60 to 90 seconds before pressing resend, and do not press it more than two or three times.
- Try the alternative method the service offers, such as a voice call, email or authenticator app.
- If you are roaming, make sure your plan supports receiving international SMS.
- Contact the service's support if nothing works; some outages are on their side.
Fixes when using a virtual number
If you are using a virtual number from OTPX, the checklist is different because there is no phone to restart. What matters is the number itself.
- Double-check the format. Select the right country in the app and paste the local part, or paste the full international number if the field supports it.
- Make sure SMS is selected. If the app offers a call or in-app delivery, choose SMS. Virtual numbers here are for receiving text messages.
- Request once, then wait. Give it 60 to 90 seconds. The Get OTP page checks for messages automatically every few seconds, so you do not need to refresh.
- Try another server. Each server is a different provider. If one provider's range is not accepted by the service, another in the same country may work.
- Try another country. Some services accept some countries much more readily than others.
- Use a fresh browser or app session if you have had several failed attempts in a row, since some services get stricter after repeated failures.
- Cancel and move on rather than waiting forever. You can cancel a number before an SMS arrives and get the full amount back to your wallet immediately.
If no SMS arrives within 20 minutes, OTPX cancels the number and refunds the full amount to your wallet automatically. You do not need to open a ticket.
Service-specific advice is in our guides for WhatsApp verification and Telegram verification, and you can browse all services on the virtual number page.
How refunds work on OTPX
Since this is the question we hear most, here is the short version:
- No SMS within 20 minutes: the number is cancelled and you are refunded in full, automatically.
- You cancel before an SMS arrives: full refund to your wallet.
- A code was received: the order is complete and not refundable, even if the code later turns out to be expired or the app rejects the account for other reasons.
- Some numbers can receive more than one SMS while still active, so if the service sends a second code, check the Get OTP page again.
The refund policy covers edge cases.
Things that do not help
A few habits make things worse:
- Spamming the resend button. This is the fastest way to hit a rate limit.
- Retrying the exact same server and country many times when it has already failed. Change something.
- Trying to get around a platform's restrictions. If a service has blocked your device or account, more numbers will not fix that, and repeatedly trying to evade a block goes against the platform's terms and OTPX's acceptable use policy.
Still stuck?
If you have tried several servers and countries and codes still are not arriving for a particular service, check the help centre or contact OTPX support at [email protected] or on Telegram at @OTPX_support. Tell them the service, country and server you used and roughly when, so they can look into it quickly.
Acceptance always varies by platform and country, and no provider can promise that every service will accept every number. What you can count on is that you will not pay for a code that never came.
Frequently asked questions
How long should I wait for an OTP before resending?
Wait 60 to 90 seconds. Resending too quickly can invalidate the first code or trigger the service's rate limits.
Does DND block OTP messages in India?
DND generally does not block transactional OTPs, but spam filters and third-party SMS apps can hide them. Check your spam folder and any SMS filtering app.
Why is my virtual number not getting the OTP?
The service may not accept that number range, the number may be in the wrong format, or the service may be sending the code by call or in-app instead of SMS. Try another server or country.
Do I lose money if the OTP never arrives on OTPX?
No. If no SMS arrives within 20 minutes, the number is cancelled and the full amount is refunded to your OTPX wallet automatically.
Can I get a refund after the code arrives?
No. Once a code has been received, the order is complete. You can cancel for a refund only before any SMS arrives.
